HON 3397Z, Makerspaces: Intersections of Art and Everything
This course examines multidisciplinary concepts applied within makerspaces as students complete hands-on design projects using beginner-level do-it-yourself techniques, including “upcycling” recyclable materials, 2D subtractive manufacturing (i.e. CNC machines that trim acrylic, cardboard, vinyl), 3D additive manufacturing (i.e. 3D modeling, printing), textiles (i.e. embroidery, sewing), and electrical circuits (i.e. micro-controllers, sensors).
EDTC 5310 Introduction to Educational Technology
This course introduces students to issues relating to the educational applications of digital technologies and to offer hands-on experiences in various aspects of classroom-based and online educational computer use. The course focuses on the use of free, web-based tools that can be used to connect to content and pedagogy.
EDTC 5330 Implementing Educational Technology
This course is designed to introduce students to leadership skills required for implementing technology into an educational setting. Topics include: EdTech Decision Makers: Policy, Standards, and Implementation; Teacher Attitudes & Beliefs About Implementing Technology; Considerations for Effective Professional Development; Designing Effective Professional Development; The Big “So What”: Preparing Presentations that Inspire Action; Planning and Presenting the Annual EdTech Conference).
EDTC 5340 Issues in Educational Technology – Digital Fabrication & Simple Electronics
This course explores technology-infused design-based learning strategies in the context of educational makerspaces. We focus on free software and inexpensive hardware, including: 2D fabrication machines (Silhouette Cameo), 3D printers (MakerBot Replicator Mini), free design software (Silhouette Studio, Inkscape, Makerbot PrintShop, TinkerCad) and simple electronics (Autodesk 123D Circuits, LittleBits, Scratch, Scratch Jr., Makey Makey, PicoBoard, Arduino, LilyPad Arduino). Projects include the development of lesson plans that authentically integrate design technologies into a variety of content areas, which will be featured on The MAKE Lab website. Additionally, students participate in a service-learning project in which they facilitate free weekend workshops for teachers and K-12 students within the San Marcos community.
EDTC 5340 Issues in Educational Technology – Video Production (Fall 2012)
This course explores the world of digital video. We explore various cameras, video editing programs, web video, and learn the basic concepts of videography. Projects include the development of instructional videos and creative original productions.
